Avi-sup - PROBIOTICS
High quality live beneficial bacteria specilally selected for all avian species now available at affordable prices.

The gastro intestinal tract of healthy birds is populated by beneficial bacteria. As soon as your bird is under any kind of stress, if it is a young baby bird, if it is ill and if it has been given antibiotics, your bird is at risk because the pathogenic bacteria multiply and take over most of the surface area in the gastro intestinal tract.

Contains : Lactobacillus acidophilus
Streptococci faecium
Bifidobacteria
Mannanoligosaccharide

By feeding them Avi-Probiotics, you can ensure that the beneficial bacteria
that have been destroyed are quickly replaced before the pathogenic bacteria
have a chance to take over.

Feed daily to handreared young birds, stressed birds and birds that have been
on antibiotics. Feed weekly to all other birds as a preventative measure, to
increase immunity and reduce the risk of enteric infections.

Feeding Instructions : Add only one heaped teaspoon to one kilogram of softfood
or fruit and vegetables.

VETARK - Vitamins, Minerals and Supplements
A well known range of excellent products

NUTROBAL - A vitamin/mineral supplement specifically formulated as a high calcium "balancer " to correct diets deficient in calcium (ie. most diets). Of special value in hand rearing of the long-legged species, but useful for all species. When mixed at 2:1 with ACE-High it provides the ideal blend for breeding parrots. Deficiency in calcium and vitamin D3 can prevent birds laying and cause soft shell or rickets.

The Calcium:Phosphorus ratio is very important in ensuring healthy bone growth, and this supplement with a Ca:P ratio in the range of 40-50:1 is extremely valuable in correcting deficient diets.

VET1- 100g -  £5.52     VET2 - 250g - £11.22

AVIMIX is a readymix of Nutrobal and ACE-High in the ratio 2:1, it is packed in 50g tubs to be suitable for the bird keeper with only a small number of birds. This provides the ideal mix for birds whether growing or breeding, or simply being kept as pets. Bird keepers with larger collections can continue to mix their own using the Nutrobal and ACE-High.

We have found that putting an amount into the palm of a clean hand or on a knife point and blowing it at food, scatters it well and increases palatability by spreading it well. Some aviculturists like to use Avimix in a pepper pot, this also works well. Careless use leaves some food with a lot, and some with a little, which allows animals to avoid it. VET5 - 50g - £5.58     VET6 - 250g - £17.71

ACE-HIGH - This is a special vitamin supplement to which is formulated to provide high levels of those vitamins shown to be involved in aiding animals such as fish, birds or reptiles through periods of stress and disease. Primarily it is a mixture of the vitamins A,C & E along with smaller quantities of other vitamins and minerals including B1, B2, B6 & B12.

Vitamins A and E are both involved in helping the body resist infection. Vitamin A is essential for maintenance of healthy mucous membranes such as the mouth, lungs and gut. Vitamin E has been shown to boost the immune mechanism in some species. Vitamin C is used up very quickly by the body when it is under stress and so must be replaced.

Certain groups, particularly psittacines and Australian finches have been shown to have a high requirement for vitamin A which is often not met from the diet. Seed eating psittacines actually get very little, even those getting fruit and carrots and the traditional sources of green foods and rape seed must convert the dietary carotene to vitamin A, a process which may well not be very efficient. Deficiency problems range from poor fertility and hatchability in eggs, to snuffles, pneumonia, feather plucking in adults and even kidney disease leading to sciatic paralysis. VET3 - 50g - £6.08     VET4 - 100g - £9.48

BSP Vitamin drops - BSP stands for broad spectrum. Like all of our other vitamins these are high potency vitamin drops so that only a small amount is needed. They are ideal for medicating water for birds which won't accept vitamins any other way, particularly suited to the softbills but fine for any bird. The level of vitamin A is high so even psittacines will do well on them.

All of the small seed eaters are easily supplemented with BSP via the water. Palatability as with all of our products is good and effective levels are taken. Several very successful budgerigar breeders are using the product to very good effect (to the extent of sending unsolicited testimonials).

Some owners like to use water soluble products only once a week, with the 'average' suspicious bird this means that on those days the bird may simply not drink. When you use BSP we recommend that you do so every day.

AVIPRO - Avipro is a probiotic combination of bacteria, enzymes, electrolytes and vitamins. Its high palatability means it can be added to the drinking water making its use simple for all species of birds.

AVIPRO contains:
· Two species of Lactobacillus with Streptococcus faecium which live for a short time in the birds gut, helping to stabilise the pH.
· Yeasts to provide a source of amino acids and vitamins.
· lipase (often low in young birds), amylase, protease and cellulase.
· electrolytes to aid in maintaining adequate levels in birds with diarrhoea which lose electrolytes

It is unnecessary and may be undesirable for "artificial" strains of Lactobacillus to colonise the psittacine gut, it is only necessary for them to live a short time to establish the right conditions. By their combined action the ingredients of AVIPRO help to create and maintain slightly acidic conditions in the gut to provide the correct background for the birds own flora to restabilise.

For general use as a routine nutritional aid, 1 scoop per 200ml drinking water can be used. This is especially useful when birds diets are being changed or when moulting, or when birds are being conditioned for the breeding season.

For support of stressed birds use 4g (one scoop) per 100ml of drinking water. This is also useful for final conditioning and post-racing support of racing pigeons. A very important aspect of this is the use by the veterinary surgeon in birds which are under treatment with antibacterials where the normal flora may be unbalanced and a bloom of inappropriate bacteria may occur causing perhaps haemorrhagic enteritis. This use has proved particularly important in macaws.

Do not use probiotics in diets with a high proportion of milk solids. We have had no problems associated with this but other lactobacillus products have, therefore we caution against it. VET10 - 100g  - £8.26     VET11 - 300g - £18.71

AVIPRO PAEDIATRIC - Following the highly successful launch of our water soluble probiotic AVIPRO, we are now pleased to announce that AVIPRO PAEDIATRIC specifically designed for baby birds is available.AVIPRO Paediatric is specially formulated for use with neonates (and milk based feeds) and contains a lower level of Lactobacillus with a much enhanced level of enzymes.

AVIPRO is a probiotic with Lactobacillus which helps to colonise the bowel of birds, this is intended to be a short lived colonisation to allow the birds normal gut bacteria to establish (or re-establish after stress, illness or treatment with antibiotics). AVIPRO also contains electrolytes and dextrose to support and help to rehydrate the bird which may have been stressed. Because many aviculturists use milk-based products in their handrearing formula (eg Milupa) we developed AVIPRO PAEDIATRIC to help in the support of chicks being handreared.

AVIPRO PAEDIATRIC contains a lower level of bacteria, just to act as a more normal background level, the most important aspect is the inclusion of enzymes (protease, cellulase and amylase) to begin digestion of the food. This gives a valuable boost to the more compromised chicks or those traditionally thought of as difficult to handrear. One effect of using the product is to help maintain the more acidic gut conditions necessary to inhibit Candida and E.coli.

The regime for use:

At 3-4 hours post hatch when most handrearers just use water, use a solution of AVIPRO at recommended dilution levels. This gives the gut an initial boost in establishing the correct conditions for the natural bacteria. A starter pack of AVIPRO is included in the 50g pots of AVIPRO PAEDIATRIC.

Then use a quarter teaspoon of AVIPRO PAEDIATRIC per 2oz (60g) of made up food. This should be used in every feed until approximately 3-4 weeks of age, possibly longer. Making the feed up with water.

At 3-4 weeks when perhaps other foods are being introduced AVIPRO can be reintroduced in the water and used to make up feeds until the chick is weaned (starting at 9wks in many species of parrot).VET12 - 50g - £8.36

CRITICAL CARE FORMULA - CCF is the ultimate product for parenteral nutrition of birds (it is also used with great effect in reptiles). The product is a mixture of selected short chain maltodextrins (derived from corn starch) and a protein concentrate supplemented with amino acids. The protein source has been designed to match the constituents of whole egg protein.

Anorexic patients or birds with wasting problems can be helped during treatment by parenteral feeding. This needs to be sufficiently often to be effective yet not too often that it compounds the problem due to stress. CCF was formulated with this in mind.

Based on available papers and our own extensive trials with specialist veterinarians we established a blend which achieved what we wanted. Each 100g contains 361 kcal of energy and 14.4g of protein, this aims to provide 4g protein/100kcal. Made up at 1: 2 it provides 1.4kcal/ml, the osmolality is carefully regulated to ensure absorption.

The product should be made up freshly each time. It has great benefits over commonly used liquid formulations of easily digestible carbohydrates in that it is a powder and can be stored until a small amount is needed. The liquid formulations used previously generally only provided carbohydates and also had to be thrown away 24 hours after opening. CCF in powder form remains stable for months provided that the container is sealed and also provides a suitable protein source which counters the hypoproteinaemic states of catabolism, which in birds especially is a major problem.

CCF is used at a dose rate of one scoop per 100g of animal per day, mixing one scoop of CCF with two scoops of water and administering by gavage tube - usually split into two or three feeds.

CCF has also been used with great success by pigeon owners for pre- and post-race conditioning, here it can be simply added to the drinking water.

Contraindications, warnings
Because CCF is designed to be used at a particular concentration it is dangerous to make the solution more concentrated. Highly concentrated solutions may not move through the gut, sticking to the gut wall and encouraging bacterial growth, this has been found to be a problem in reptiles due to their anatomy and physiology.Such a hyperosmotic solution may draw fluids into the gut and effectively dehydrate the patient.
VET13 - 150g - £10.13

Calcium Lactate provides an extra calcium source which can be added to the drinking water for birds at risk of calcium deficiency. It is used in conjunction with vitamin supplements which provide the vitamin D3 needed for calcium absorption. VET28 - 140g - £8.20

ZOLCAL-D can be used in support of all breeding birds or birds with a calcium problem such as chicks with rickets, folding fractures or egg bound birds or hypocalcaemic birds(especially common in afrcan greys). Nutrobal will often be used long term but ZOLCAL-D may be used when they are first seen.
