Precautions
Poultry farmers, bird keepers, pigeon fanciers and even budgie owners have been told to lock up their birds in the event of an outbreak of the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu.
Use of discinfectant mats, just as used during foot and mouth, can help keep the virus out of bird houses.
Keep all food and bedding well away from the wild bird population.

TAMODINE-E An
iodophore disinfectant, suitable for general purpose aviary disinfection.
Also for use in veterinary surgeries, hospitals, schools, catering
establishments, shops, and other public and industrial premises
as a general purpose disinfectant.
It has the benefit of having a built-in
colour-marker, which means you can see where you have treated,
and also when you have washed it off. In a solution for equipment
dips, washes, footbaths etc its colour fades when it becomes
inactive.
In aviaries or on dishes, wipe or rinse
off the Tamodine-E before use. Hand dips: For personnel handling
food, etc use 15-30ml in 10 litres of water. See the article
Disinfection in the bird nursery for specific information. Walls,
floors and other surfaces can be washed with a solution of 45ml
in 10 litres of water. Use 90ml in 10 litres of water for porous
or heavily soiled surfaces.
Dishes, utensils, nets etc: Wash in
a solution of 30-45ml in 10 litres of warm water. For sanitising
rinse only, immerse for at least two minutes in a solution of
15ml in 10 litres of water.
Tamodine can be used to clean food and
also may be used in water for soaking seed or pulses, to inhibit
bacterial or fungal contamination. When used this way 1ml of
Tamodine-E is used per litre of water. Rinse well before feeding.

ARK-KLENS This
is a blend of benzalkonium chloride (quaternary ammonium compounds
or QAC's) specially selected for safety of use. This family of
chemicals are powerful disinfectants with an additional detergent
and deodorising action.
At the recommended concentrations ARK-KLENS
is non-corrosive, it is bactericidal against a wide range of
gram negative and gram positive bacteria, some viruses and some
fungi are also susceptible. This makes ARK-KLENS suitable for
disinfection of the animal "environment" such as cages,
kennels, and food and water bowls etc. It can also be used safely
as a disinfectant for birds eggs and incubators.
As a disinfectant it has broad antibacterial
activity and is virucidal against lipophilic viruses. It is of
particular use in exotic bird quarantine situations due to its
efficacy against Chlamydia (ref. Helga Gerlach in Ritchie, Harrison
& Harrison 1994, Avian Medicine.Principles and Application,
"Infectivity has been shown to be destroyed within minutes
by benzalkonium chloride"). These authors also suggest its
use for daily cage cleansing and as a table top disinfectant.

General disinfection is carried out
using 10ml/5 litres ie a final concentration of 0.025%.
This concentration is suitable for egg
washing although up to (1 in 1000) is used safely on poultry
eggs.

Problems with Pseudomonas growing in QAC's are reported but at
normal usage concentrations this is not a problem with Ark-Klens,
provided that solutions are changed daily, particularly once
contaminated. Pseudomonas has in fact been found to grow in usage
concentrations of most disinfectants, THEY ALL NEED TO BE CHANGED
FREQUENTLY. In humidifiers it is recommended that water not be
left more than 3 days before being changed.

AMPROTECT- especially for eggs
Amprotect (a colourless liquid, based on
dodecycly-di-(aminoethyl) glycine) is used at a concentration
of 1% (at which its pH is 7.7). It has a wide spectrum of activity
against bacteria (gram negative and gram positive including TB),
fungi and some viruses.
Amprotect has deodorising properties
by exerting chemical effects directly on the odour (binding it)
and by killing the organisms which produce the odour. It also
has excellent dirt removal capabilities.
The major benefit of Amprotect as a
disinfectant is its ability to leave a thin, imperceptible but
bactericidal film on treated surfaces giving a prolonged period
of activity. Since it does not contain free alkali or chlorine
it is very safe and has good compatibility with skin. Its toxicity
is extremely low, so there is very little likelihood in practical
circumstances of any danger from accidental misuse.
Amprotect is particularly valued by
aviculturists for the bird "nursery" where Pseudomonads
may be a problem. It is ideally suited to psittacine egg disinfection
prior to incubation.
This is now widely used by parrot breeders
and in commercial ostrich rearing facilities. See the article

For all general cleansing and disinfection
we recommend ARK-KLENS, particularly for its valuable effect
against psittacosis.

TAMODINE This
is a povidone-iodine product similar to one used by many Veterinary
Surgeons for hand disinfection prior to surgery. It has a wide
spectrum of activity against bacteria, protozoa, yeasts, fungi
and some viruses. It has all of the activity of free iodine but
with much reduced irritant sensitising effects, and it does not
stain.
We suggest that you apply some Tamodine
to wet cotton wool and use this gently to cleanse the surface
of ulcers or wounds. Once clean, wipe off any excess, and release
the bird.
POVIDONE-IODINE COMPOUNDS - Referred
to by Holt 1981 as "Probably the most consistently safe
antiseptics/disinfectants of value are the povidone-iodine compounds..."

AMPROTECT Hand rinse An alcohol based hand rinse with amphoteric
compounds and skin emollients, ideal where a high standard of
hand hygiene is essential. A 3ml "dose" is rubbed well
into visually clean hands until they are dry, which takes about
30 seconds.
Suitable for use in the surgery, or
in the field, to avoid cracked hands from frequent washing. Ideal
for the petkeeper when going between cages or groups of animals.
The owner/handler has been shown to
be the major vector of disease transmission in collections.
